Early-life behavior, survival, and maternal personality in a wild marsupial

چکیده
Abstract Individual behavior varies for many reasons, but how early in life are such differences apparent, and they under selection? We investigated variation early-life a wild eastern gray kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) population, quantified associations of with survival. Behavior young was measured while still the pouch as subadults, survival to weaning monitored. found consistent between offspring different mothers levels activity at stage, flight initiation distance (FID) subadult survival, indicating similarity siblings. There no evidence covariance measures versus stages, nor behavioral traits However, there strong FIDs those their tested times. Further, total repeatability FID (51.5%), more than half could be attributed mothers. Our results indicate that 1) is apparent very stage development (still case this marsupial); 2) between-mother can explain much (or “personality”) juvenile behavior; 3) exhibit similar responses stimuli. 4) we selection via or maternal marsupial.

15 صفحه اولMarker-dependent associations among oxidative stress, growth and survival during early life in a wild mammal
Oxidative stress (OS) is hypothesized to be a key physiological mechanism mediating life-history trade-offs, but evidence from wild populations experiencing natural environmental variation is limited. We tested the hypotheses that increased early life growth rate increases OS, and that increased OS reduces first-winter survival, in wild Soay sheep (Ovis aries) lambs. We measured growth rate and...
متن کاملEffects of early-life competition and maternal nutrition on telomere lengths in wild meerkats.
Early-life adversity can affect health, survival and fitness later in life, and recent evidence suggests that telomere attrition may link early conditions with their delayed consequences. Here, we investigate the link between early-life competition and telomere length in wild meerkats. Our results show that, when multiple females breed concurrently, increases in the number of pups in the group ...

15 صفحه اولEarly-Life Stress Paradigm Transiently Alters Maternal Behavior, Dam-Pup Interactions, and Offspring Vocalizations in Mice
Animal models can help elucidate the mechanisms through which early-life stress (ELS) has pathophysiological effects on the developing brain. One model that has been developed for rodents consists of limiting the amount of bedding and nesting material during the first postnatal weeks of pup life. This ELS environment has been shown to induce "abusive" behaviors by rat dams towards pups, while m...
